Uhhhh, yeah, it’s been probably 6-7 years at least. I do love decade parties. Back in the day, I was the Decade Diva and companies would hire me to do an 80s party of 70s for the end of their conference or at a special corporate party. Studying the decades and creating programs using the jargon, fads, trivia was so much fun. However, when will I wear my massive wardrobe of clothes from the 20s-80s? Well, I am a bit stuck in the 80′s. I do go to many 80s parties.

Because I was in the events community, I was always invited to big, dress up, theme parties. Those days seem to be over, booohooo! I am waiting for invitations, hint, hint.

Anyway, back in the day, I got to wear all sorts of fun clothing from different countries and eras. Nowadays, I need to create an event happen if i want to wear odd clothing. I admit many of the clothes I have accumulated over the last 30 years, I have not worn yet. To relieve me of any guilt, I am going to wear all of the clothes, before I donate them.

For all of the clothing, I want to hang on to, I must wear them before July 1, 2012. This includes finding an occasion to wear my hot pink, sequin dress, belly dancing outfit and many more.

I think the last time I was at the ballet was maybe 7th grade?

Ballet and opera I feared would be an expensive nap. I know my attention span is short, so I have not bothered to go to either. My friend invited me, so I thought I would give it a go. Yeah! I didn’t fall asleep and I enjoyed the difference of this type of spectatorship.

Did you know you can have a booster seat for adults? Yup, I was as tall as my 6 foot tall friend. Our 7th row seat converted into a front row view with the big cushion. How fun!

My observations

It’s a leap for me to understand the story behind the dancing. For example they did a Romeo and Juliet vignette, but had it not been titled this in the program, I might have guessed it was a scene about kite flying or how swiss cheese holes came to be.

I don’t like males tights, unless it they are wicked cool designed tights as part of a costume. The dancer in the Romeo scene wore nude colored tights. Each timed he turned around, he mooned us. I was wondering if anyone else giggled.

One of the leads was Asian. Yeah, good job fella. However, I was bummed that he did not show his excitement for the performance. He intensely concentrated, but did not show glee like they other dancers. The facial expression means a lot to me. How lovely it is to see people enjoy what they are doing.

Out of all of the types of dancing, ballet has to be the most unsexy. Sexy to me is not skinny guys in tights and super rail girls binded into rigid corsets moving in structured yet fluid fashion. I think its a lack of hip movement or too much great posture, and lack of slouch. I certainly didn’t think ballet would be sexy, but as I watched with both eyes open, the performances shouted “unsexy.”

Action Items

Seeing all the bling, I am ready to bust out all of my pageantry jewelry, tiara and everything blinged out. I will fish around to find my petticoats and get more circular skirts so i can twirl.

The posture of the these ballerinas is “insane in the membrane.” I am a little inspired to take 10 minutes a day of no slouching.

With the lack of the expression from the Asian lead, I am reminded to be more expressive.

Overall, yeah, interesting. I would not pay for it, but I would be a pleasant, appreciative guest of free tickets.

By the way, I just met my first ballerino. Did you know there was such a name?

I recently caught an NPR interview with Dr. Gabor Mate, a best-selling writer and physician who specializes in additions. Fascinating! As I listened to him describe the signs of addiction, I thought of mine. Certainly, there is no doubt about it, I am a workaholic, but I haven’t been diagnosed as a musicaholic and danceaholic. I know “fer sure, dude,” I am addicted.

Recently, I have allowed myself to play music at work, even though it can decrease my productivity. Typing while doing the “Roger Rabbit” or “Running Man” is challenging, or belting out “hidey, hidey ho” to “Minnie the Moocher“. Starting in November, I also let myself workout even if my work was not done. With my workout came music, which transports me to happyland. In college, I would workout and dance for at least couple of hours in addition to the exercise from tennis team and intramural soccer practices. Can you imagine six hours of exercise and only an hour or two on the computer? Nowadays, in between workout sets, I am checking the news, email and Facebook. It’s crazy how much our habits have changed in less than 2 decades. Back then my metabolism was “wickedly awesome.” Adding the music and dancing back into my life has increased my happy quotient and my metabolism level.

So addictions build. I have music in my ear most of my day. Thank you, Pandora and Lastfm and Youtube’s Playlist.

Gabor Mate talks about addiction meaning something that results in bad consequences. True, I have less time to work and I am a pinch more distracted by the glorious, soothing sounds of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson and Luther Van Dross, but there are bennies.

Besides happy, joy-joy and exercise, this is my creativity gestation time. My mind is not in front of the computer, it’s on my hip. The music takes me on a time machine back to high school days, kindergarten, college days and all around. My work projects are floating around in my head and “seasoning”. It’s amazing how valuable this period is. Often fresh perspectives surface.

Now, when I am dancing, whether it is between sets or in front of my 10 foot high mirror, or at neighborhood bar, I go with the music even if I don’t like the song. Similar to improv, I see if the music will make me move differently. Inviting myself to be transported by the multi-eras Ihelps me free my creativity to find new perspectives and ideas for my businesses.

Back in the day, I pretty much went out dancing, singing or socializing every night for many years. If you want to keep yourself fresh and connected to the average Joe, this is the way to go. My love of music and dancing puts me in different communities. I get to explore the lives of people unfamiliar to me, a different perspective. Even though, I rarely talk about my business when I go out singing or dancing, just being around different people, lends credence to “different strokes for different folks”. I find these keep my mind open and feeds my creativity. The benefits of my musicaholic and danceaholic overcome the loss in productivity and time.

Take a peek at your life to see if you might need to change up your lifestyle.
